Overview
Under general direction of the Streets & Utilities Operations Manager, the position performs highly skilled work in the repair and maintenance on a wide variety of mechanical equipment including automobiles, trucks, tractors, construction, maintenance, and other power-driven equipment. The incumbent must exercise independent judgment in diagnosing mechanical problems and selecting methods of repair. This position must work well independently and with teams, while providing innovative, excellent and respectful customer service, which support the City of Louisville’s mission and values. Performs other work as assigned or required.

Hiring Range: $47,091.20 – $54,163.20
Salary Range: $47,091.20 – $62,275.20

Examples of Duties

  • Inspect, diagnose and locate mechanical difficulties in automobiles, trucks and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered maintenance and construction equipment.
  • Road tests, inspects and troubleshoots automotive, and light duty trucks and equipment to assess their condition and determine repairs.
  • Maintains and repairs automotive equipment, trucks, backhoes, loaders, and similar equipment in the garage, outdoors, or in the field.
  • Performs preventative maintenance activity and inspection of vehicles and equipment, diagnoses problems, and identifies repair needs; schedules vehicles for preventive maintenance service.
  • Adjusts, disassembles, and repairs or rebuilds drum and disk braking systems, valves, master cylinders, and pneumatic or other hydraulic controls.
  • Repair, adjust and replace brake systems on light duty vehicles including disc, hydraulic and air brakes.
  • Repairs and replaces suspension and steering components.

Adjusts, repairs, overhauls, or prepares for job shop automatic and manual transmissions, differentials, power take off drives, clutches, and related drive train components.
Rebuilds and/or installs starters, generators, distributors, and voltage regulators.

  • Rebuilds, repairs, or replaces radiators; installs new cores; repairs hydraulic systems.
  • May make emergency/ on-site road service calls to stationary or disabled equipment.
  • May conduct road tests to locate defects in operation and check repair work before returning vehicle to service; advises other departments in the field, as required.
  • Raises vehicles and equipment with hydraulic jack or hoist to gain access to mechanical components on the underside of vehicles; removes components such as engines, transmissions, or differential; disassembles unit and inspects parts for wear; repairs and replaces parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves and bearings.
  • Repairs and/or replaces, starters, and pumps; rewires ignition system, lights, and instrument panel; repairs or replaces shock absorbers.
  • Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms and related parts and equipment.
  • Repairs and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials and clutches. Tune up engines, replacing ignition parts and cleaning and adjusting carburetors.
  • Repair and replace such components as relays, lights and switches.
  • Diagnose and repair computerized control systems, ignition systems, power steering and cooling systems.
  • Responsible for and maintains the vehicle maintenance program, record keeping, and work orders as well as time and materials used by job.
  • Orders materials and supplies required for maintenance and repair work.
  • Provides 24-hour on-call response for emergency maintenance and snow and ice removal from streets and public facilities.
  • Clears ice and snow from streets, roads, parking lots and sidewalks to insure the safety of the community.

General Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade.

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety requirements, rules and regulations of the trade.
  • Knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of a variety of light and heavy vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the principles of operation of the gasoline and diesel fueled engines.
  • Knowledge of air conditioning, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Skill in the use of tools and electronic and mechanical testing equipment of the trade.
  • Skill in the use of a personal computer and Microsoft Office software programs as well as other maintenance software programs.
  • Skill in the use of computerized automotive diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to adapt to ever-changing and situational needs of multiple department requests and prioritize accordingly.
  • Ability to read, understand, and complete written request and work assignments and work with and understand schematics and maps.
  • Ability to perform a full range of equipment mechanical work including the troubleshooting of gasoline and diesel powered equipment for both major and minor repair work.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.
  • Ability to learn to maintain a variety of shop and repair records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Must be able to read manuals, understand diagrams and interpret video.

Ability to be on call, work nights, weekends, holidays, and shifts.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Completion of a high school diploma or G.E.D, plus additional coursework pertaining to auto mechanics and heavy equipment repair. At least three years of experience in auto mechanics and heavy equipment repair at journeyman mechanic level in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of automotive and mechanical equipment. Equivalent combination of training, education and experience may be deemed acceptable by the City of Louisville.

SPECIAL LICENSE, REGISTRATION, OR CERTIFICATE REQUIRED:
Valid State of Colorado Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record, with the ability to attain a commercial driver’s license class B w/ air brakes within six (6) months of employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands, fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; read, speak and hear. The employee is required to walk and sit.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The majority of the work is performed in the shop environment. There are occasions when the employee is required to respond to a field situation, and in such instances is exposed to traffic, and all types of weather conditions.

While performing this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, and is occasionally exposed to very wet and cold, or very humid conditions, as well as toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration and the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
